Antique British earthenware lustre punch bowl with an interior decoration of an overglaze transfer pattern of ship. Pink marbled lustre is achieved with a splash effect, created by drops of oil on the lustred glaze prior to firing. Beautiful depiction of ship in the high seas on the inside of the bowl with pink splash luster background.
It features a beautiful design of the American ‘Ship Caroline', which was lost at sea in 1805 and making it a great addition to any maritime antiques collection. The bowl dates back to circa 1899 and was crafted with exceptional attention to detail. Highly collectible Sunderland lustreware is a type of lustreware pottery made, mostly in the early 19th century, in several potteries around Sunderland, England.
According to Michael Gibson there were 16 potteries in Sunderland of which 7 are known to have produced lustrewares (alongside conventional wares of various types) in the nineteenth century. Many are not marked, and are hard or impossible to distinguish from similar wares made in Staffordshire pottery, as well as Newcastle upon Tyne and North Shields, so to some extent Sunderland has become a term for the style, rather than a specific indication of origin.
The bowl is in excellent condition, with slight, unnoticeable crazing to the glaze.
