Late-19th-century French porcelain figure attributed to Samson, Paris, in the Dresden style. A courtly gentleman stands with a hurdy-gurdy on a rococo scroll base with tree-stump support and a tricorn hat at foot. By mass, glossy glaze, bouquet-sprig painting, and the base and staging, the features are characteristic of Samson, Paris. The gallant musician with vielle/hurdy-gurdy is a rococo motif rooted in the commedia dell'arte; once tied to "low" street music and pastoral masquerade, it was reinterpreted in a refined salon key in the later 19th century. In mid-18th-century France the hurdy-gurdy (wheel fiddle) came into vogue among the aristocracy and salons; music was written for it by noted composers, including Vivaldi. Comparable porcelain figures are recorded in museum catalogues and auction literature.
Marks: spurious underglaze blue mark to base, typical of Paris reproductions after 18th-century models.
Condition: excellent; no restoration, breaks or losses; slight rubbing to gilt at cuffs. The instrument is intact.
