A large Royal Worcester porcelain figure known as "The Bather Surprised", model 486, in the rare Shot Enamel finish. Produced from 1875 (example shown at the Paris Exhibition of 1878), the form follows Thomas Brock's 1868 sculpture Salmacis, modelled and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1869; Royal Worcester purchased the original and rights to reproduce it in porcelain. Around 1900-1906 the factory reissued the form with the decorative Shot Enamel surface, creating a refined bronze-and-gold effect. The printed mark reads WORCESTER SHOT ENAMEL. Shot Enamel is a Royal Worcester technique producing a fine grain on the glazed surface, like tiny pearls or "shot", lending texture to drapery and bases and elevating detail and desirability.
Collecting note: large Shot Enamel Worcester figures are scarce exhibition-grade pieces and are sought after for their scale, surface and Edwardian luxury appeal.
