A finely decorated English bone china spill vase produced by Spode during the Regency period, circa 1820-1825. This elegant trumpet-shaped form reflects the fashionable chinoiserie taste inspired by Chinese export porcelain.
Designed for the mantelpiece, spill vases were used to hold rolled paper spills or wooden splints for lighting candles and fireplaces. During the Regency period they became one of the most popular ornamental porcelain forms for the domestic interior.
The vase is decorated in documented Spode pattern no. 2975 with brightly painted mandarin ducks swimming among lotus flowers and green lily pads. The palette combines emerald green, iron red, yellow and cobalt blue with delicate gilding. Raised pearl-beaded borders frame the rim and foot, while the lower socle is finished with a pink geometric diaper ground.
The underside bears the hand-painted pattern number 2975 in brownish-gilt enamel. The absence of a printed Spode mark is normal for smaller ornamental wares of this early period.
