This refined 19th century porcelain figurine was produced by the celebrated Samson factory of Paris, known for its high-quality historic reproductions. The composition depicts a seated shepherdess holding a bouquet, with a sheep resting at her feet, inspired by mid-18th-century Chelsea pastoral models.
Hard-paste porcelain with polychrome enamels and gilding, set on a rococo shell- and scroll-moulded base applied with coloured flowers and foliage.
The underside bears a hand-painted red anchor mark, used by Samson as an intentional imitation of the Chelsea factory mark, together with a small numeral and a single vent hole typical of French porcelain of the period.
Samson works are now highly collectible in their own right and among the most respected 19th-century historicist porcelains. This example ranks among the finest pastoral forms produced by the workshop for modelling, decoration and preservation.
