A finely decorated Japanese Kutani porcelain teapot accompanied by a matching vase that serves beautifully as a decorative stand. Dating to the late Meiji period, c.1890, the piece displays the rich colours and elaborate surface decoration that made Kutani ware famous throughout the export market.
The teapot is decorated in the celebrated aka-e and kinran-de traditions, combining iron-red enamels with extensive gilding. The naturalistically modelled bamboo-form handle and spout are particularly attractive features, enriched with matching red-and-gold ornament. Landscape reserves, birds, flowers and a charming karako figure beneath a pine tree are painted in fine miniature style.
The accompanying vase is decorated with a bird amongst flowering plants and matching iron-red ornament. Its proportions make it an ideal decorative support for the teapot, while remaining fully functional as a small vase in its own right.
When illuminated from behind, the porcelain body reveals a noticeable degree of translucency, highlighting the thin walls and refined quality of the porcelain. The density of the decoration and the quality of the gilded detailing reflect the highly labour-intensive nature of Kutani production during the Meiji period.
