This exceptional and rare pair of antique sterling silver sugar casters were made by London silversmith Charles Alchorne and assayed in 1737. Crafted in an elegant vase-shaped form, each caster features a finely pierced domed cover with intricate diamond latticework and flowing foliate scroll motifs. Shaped bell finials adorn the tops, and the removable lids allow for easy refilling.
The bodies are richly embellished with chased scrolling foliage around the shoulders, contrasting beautifully with the polished lower halves. Both stand on wide, stepped pedestal bases, giving a balanced and substantial feel.
Charles Alchorne (active 1720s-1730s) was a highly regarded Georgian silversmith. His works are rare on the market today, prized by serious collectors and featured in major museum collections. A similar sugar caster by Alchorne was sold at Christie's London, Sale 8892, Lot 176 on 10 October 2000.
Historically, such fine casters would have been used to dispense expensive sugar or powdered spices during grand dining occasions, blending practicality with refined style.
