Rare Derby porcelain flower seller figure, model no. 8, c. 1780–1784

£300.00
A finely modelled Derby porcelain figure of a seated flower seller, dating to circa 1780-1784. The figure is shown holding two flowers and a basket filled with finely painted blossoms, representing a charming pastoral subject of the late 18th century. The decoration displays strong colour fields with generous gilding, characteristic of Derby work of the period.

The model belongs to the documented Derby group "Seated boy and girl with fruit and flowers", identified in catalogues as model no. 8. Originally conceived as a pair, the present figure is the female companion with a basket of flowers. The design derives from models by Michel-Victor Acier for Meissen and was later adopted at Derby.

The group is recorded in the Derby sale catalogue of 17 April 1771 (lot 35), confirming early production and popularity. The model remained commercially successful and continued to be reissued into the first quarter of the 19th century, including versions in bone china, and was also adapted as chamber candlesticks.

This identification is supported by Clifford (1969) and William King (1925), where model no. 8 is catalogued and illustrated.

Figures from this series remain highly collectible, particularly as elements of a documented pair, but are equally appreciated as individual cabinet pieces when retaining strong colour and original gilding.
