One of Derby's most ambitious classical figures, it is rarely encountered on the market, particularly in this larger size and in such fine preservation.

Andromache, the wife of the Trojan hero Hector, became one of the enduring symbols of grief and fidelity in classical literature following Hector's death at the hands of Achilles. Here she is shown mourning beside the funerary urn containing Hector's ashes, veiled and dressed in richly enamelled classical robes, while holding a delicate floral wreath. The pedestal is decorated with military trophies commemorating Hector's death and the tragedy of the Trojan War.

The model is recorded by Peter Bradshaw in Derby Porcelain Figures 1750-1848 and is believed to have been modelled by Pierre Stephan after a print by Thomas Burke following Angelica Kauffmann. Bemrose recorded the model in two sizes, the present example corresponding to the larger version. The underside retains characteristic patch marks associated with early Derby porcelain together with the incised model number No. 100. Examples of this model are held in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Collectors will particularly appreciate the survival of the delicate floral wreath, which remains entirely intact, and the exceptional preservation of the original enamels and gilding.

Measurements

Height: 25.5 cm / 10.04″
Width: 11.8 cm / 4.65″
Depth: 8.2 cm / 3.23″
Weight: 1128 g

Condition

Excellent antique condition overall. The base has old cracks which were stabilised in the distant past. These are confined to the base and do not affect the figure itself. There are also a few small, unobtrusive firing lines to the cloak. The colours, gilding and enamels are exceptionally well preserved, the floral wreath remains undamaged, and UV examination shows no restoration to the figure itself.

Shipping & Packaging

Fully tracked and insured delivery.
Shipping cost includes professional packaging, careful handling and secure postage.
Carefully packed using recycled materials where possible.

Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description, and feel free to ask any questions.
https://gillersantiques.com/products/rare-derby-porcelain-figure-of-andromache-weeping-over-hector-s-ashes-model-100-c-1778
