A rare pair of Derby porcelain figures depicting a recumbent stag and doe, produced circa 1765-1770. Executed in soft-paste porcelain and decorated in coloured enamels, the bodies are painted with iron-red spotting and set on naturalistic bases with applied leaves and foliage.

The model is recorded by Peter Bradshaw as "Stag and Doe at Lodge" and appears across several Derby periods, beginning with the Dry-edge version B8 (1750-1755), followed by the Patch Period E99 (1759-1769), with a related bocage version E100, and later continuing in larger forms (Bradshaw, pp. 35, 123-125, 432). This pair represents the mid-18th-century development of the model.

The subject held particular relevance in Derby, where the stag formed part of the heraldic crest of the city, giving the model a strong local identity. The modelling is lively and well balanced, with expressive heads and carefully worked anatomy.

A particularly well-preserved example of a classic Derby animal model, notable for its scale and strong appeal to collectors of early English porcelain.

Doe: weight 482 g, height 12 cm (4.7″), length 17 cm (6.7″), depth 8.2 cm (3.2″)

Condition
Stag: excellent antique condition; all elements intact; a very small firing crack to the base.
Doe: small chip to one leaf; otherwise excellent antique condition with full preservation of the decoration and modelling.
