This very rare antique Staffordshire tea bowl was produced circa 1817 to commemorate the death of Princess Charlotte, the only child of the Prince Regent (later George IV) and Caroline of Brunswick, and the beloved granddaughter of George III. Had she lived, she would have become queen before Queen Victoria.
The bowl features black transfer decoration depicting Britannia mourning at a tomb with the inscription "TO THE MEMORY OF PRINCESS CHARLOTTE", surrounded by weeping angels, an orb, and classical symbols of grief. The rim and foot are accented with bands of puce lustre, a distinctive early 19th-century decorative technique associated with high-quality Staffordshire pottery.
This historical piece was made during a period of immense national mourning following Princess Charlotte's tragic death in childbirth in November 1817. Today it remains a poignant example of early royal commemorative ceramics and a significant collector's item of British royal history, mourning ware, and early 19th-century Staffordshire pottery.
