Exceptional pair of Satsuma vases by Hododa (保土田造), Yokohama, late Meiji to early Taishō. Ivory-glazed bodies with fine craquelure, rich enamels and gilt. Alternating scenes show birds among peonies and cherry blossom, and cranes beside water, framed by textile-pattern gold bands with mon. Bases with Shimazu crest above Hododa cartouche (one rubbed).
