This large mid-century stoneware statue represents Shou Xing (寿星), the Chinese god of longevity, depicted holding a peach of immortality and a knotted staff. Modelled in Shiwan, Guangdong, China, around the 1950s, the figure reflects the traditional style of the Shiwan Pottery Factory (石湾制陶厂) during the period of collective workshop production. These figures were often based on master artist designs, including those by Liu Zeiman, and finished with hand-applied detailing.

The statue is glazed in a deep oxblood red, accented with celadon green, cobalt blue, and cream highlights. The glaze has a rich, glossy texture, with incised folds in the robe and fine hand-finished features to the face and hands. The underside of the base is impressed with the Shiwan factory mark, a stylised lion emblem, and mould number 44, identifying its catalogue production model.

This is a substantial and unusually large Shiwan figure. Larger hollow stoneware pieces are much rarer due to the difficulty of successful kiln firing at this scale. This example is well-preserved and displays beautifully.

Measurements
Height: 30 cm / 11.8″
Width: 15.5 cm / 6.1″
Depth: 15.5 cm / 6.1″
Weight: 1934 g

Condition
Excellent condition with vibrant glaze and crisp modelling. The surface is glossy and rich in colour, with no chips, repairs, or post-firing damage. Two firing cracks are visible on the unglazed interior edge of the base — one on the left, one smaller on the right — both original to firing and non-structural. A small matte patch on the head, caused by glaze thinning in the kiln, is also visible and typical of hand-applied glazes from this period. Overall, a beautifully preserved and highly decorative Shiwan piece.
