Hotoda was one of the leading exporters of high-quality Japanese ceramics during the Meiji period and was known for extremely fine facial painting, rich gilding and elaborate hand-decorated surfaces. This is a substantial, heavy and hand-made ceramic work, measuring 37.5 cm high and weighing 2542 grams, with the scale and visual strength needed to become a true centrepiece in an interior.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nThe subject is the \"1000 Arhats\", Buddhist saints and enlightened disciples, shown in a dense religious composition around the body of the vase, together with a finely painted dragon. The faces are a major strength of the piece: each figure is individually rendered, with expressive eyes, powerful brows, teeth, moustaches and animated features. The dragon's head and eyes are also carefully painted, giving the composition movement and dramatic focus.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nThe surface is covered with dense gilding, raised moriage work, black and white dotted grounds, stylised wave patterns, brocade-like robes and Buddhist medallions around the neck. The quality of the decoration is far above ordinary decorative Satsuma, with a strong hand-painted character and impressive detail throughout.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nThe base bears the Shimazu crest above the gilt mark reading Satsuma Hotoda zo, indicating manufacture by the Hotoda workshop. There is restoration and overpainting to the neck\/rim area, visible mainly from one side and not disturbing the general composition or decorative power of the vase.
