A large and beautifully carved Chinese jadeite figure, dating to the late Qing / early Republic period, circa 1880-1920. This is a substantial and visually impressive piece, carved from attractive pale green jadeite with natural honey-brown tones that have been skilfully incorporated into the design.
The figure holds a lotus and is surrounded by large carved leaves and flowing botanical forms. In Chinese art, the lotus carries associations of purity, harmony, renewal and good fortune. The composition is especially successful because the figure is not simply placed among the leaves: it appears to rise naturally from the plant forms, giving the whole carving a strong sculptural presence.
The quality of the hand carving is very good. The face, hands, clothing folds, leaf veins and small plant details are carefully worked. The colour relationship between the cool pale green and the warmer brownish areas of the stone gives the object a refined and natural elegance. The jadeite also shows excellent translucency. When placed before a rear light source, the body of the carving glows through, giving the piece depth and softness.
The wooden stand was specially made for this figure. Its carved openwork and plant-like ornament reflect the botanical decoration of the jadeite carving itself, making the object feel complete and ready for display.
The condition is very good. There is one neat repair to the lotus stem and a small discreet chip to the upper part of the lotus/stem. The main figure, body, face, hands, leaves and base of the carving are otherwise in excellent condition.
