A Japanese Satsuma belt buckle from the Meiji period, c. 1890-1910, formed as two circular panels painted with dragons among stylised waves. The decoration is executed on an ivory crackle ground with enamel colours and rich gilding.
The surface combines fine gilt outlines with raised gold dots, creating a subtle textured effect typical of late Meiji Satsuma work. The panels are set into metal mounts forming a functional buckle, originally intended as a lady's accessory for a fabric or leather belt.
This Western-format buckle reflects the adaptation of Japanese decorative arts during a period when European dress was actively adopted in Japan, while also being produced for export markets where Satsuma decoration was highly prized.
