A finely modelled Japanese Satsuma earthenware figure of Hotei with a karako boy, late Meiji, c.1890. The laughing monk wears voluminous teal robes painted with cloud scrolls over an ivory crackle glaze; in his right hand he holds a folding fan (ōgi), while his left grasps the strap of the inexhaustible treasure sack. At his feet the Chinese-style child plays a den-den daiko with a tomoe device. The "sack" ground is detailed with auspicious coral, coins and a lantern, all in rich overglaze enamels. This composition impresses with professional, expensive-quality workmanship; every detail is rendered with fantastic precision and realism.
