This is not ordinary export ware or mass-produced decoration, but an individual work by a highly accomplished Satsuma master, with exceptionally fine detail, rich gilding and beautifully preserved enamel colours.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nKozan is a major and highly respected name in Japanese Satsuma ceramics. Works by Kozan are regularly sold by leading international auction houses, including Christie's and Bonhams, and his name confidently belongs among the top ten most desirable Japanese Satsuma makers and decorators of the Meiji period.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nThe bowl clearly shows the quality associated with a serious Meiji Satsuma master. The faces are individually painted, the robes are carefully detailed, the gold is rich and controlled, and the composition is far above ordinary commercial export ware. The central interior scene depicts women and children in richly decorated kimono beneath flowering branches. Around this are landscape and floral reserves, set within elaborate brocade-style grounds in gold, red, blue, turquoise and purple enamels.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nThe exterior is decorated with a continuous floral band, making the piece highly attractive from every side. The underside bears a red rectangular gilt signature panel reading Kozan.
