A very fine Japanese Satsuma bowl from the Meiji period, signed Gyokkō, dating to circa 1890-1910. This is a beautifully painted individual Satsuma work with a refined interior landscape, elegant figures, rich gilding and a highly decorative exterior bamboo design.
The bowl has the warm cream crackled glaze associated with good Meiji-period Satsuma, enhanced by polychrome enamels and extensive gilt detail. The interior is decorated with a charming Japanese landscape scene, showing women and a child among temple buildings, pagodas, trees, hills and water, with a distant mountain in the background. The scene has strong decorative presence and a pleasing sense of depth.
The quality of the work is visible in the careful architectural detail, the gilt decoration on the robes, the finely painted parasols, the layered trees and the soft landscape treatment. The exterior is decorated with a continuous bamboo design, giving the bowl a quieter but very elegant appearance from the outside. The gilt rim border adds a strong finishing frame to the composition.
The underside bears a red rectangular gilt signature panel reading Gyokkō / 玉光. This appears to be a Meiji-period Satsuma decorator or workshop name.

Excellent condition. The bowl has been checked under UV light and shows no cracks, no restoration and no structural problems. There are no visible condition issues. The enamels, colours and gilding are very well preserved.
