A rare and exceptionally beautiful Japanese Kyoto Satsuma vase from the late Meiji period, made by the celebrated Kinkōzan workshop of Kyoto, complete with its carved wooden stand. The vase has an unusual rounded form, giving it a strong sculptural presence, while the quality of the decoration places it well above ordinary export Satsuma.

The surface is covered with a refined naturalistic composition of birds, flowers, butterflies and insects. Across the warm cream ground is an extraordinarily dense field of tiny gold dots, producing a shimmering atmospheric effect. The decoration has great delicacy: the birds are painted with fine feather detail and lively movement, while the flowers are enriched with raised moriage work, carefully applied and beautifully proportioned. The upper neck is decorated with a luxurious brocade-style band in raised gilding and coloured enamels, adding to the richness of the whole piece.

The base bears the mark of the famous Kinkōzan workshop, visible both in the impressed mark and in the inscription around the foot. The quality, inscription, technique and style correspond to high-level Kyoto Satsuma production by this celebrated Meiji-period workshop.

The condition is very attractive overall. There are two small chips to the lower foot rim, one small reattached piece at the lower rim, one small chip to the upper rim and one small circular enamel chip to the body. These points are not visually disturbing when displayed and do not affect the overall impression. The colours and gilding remain exceptionally well preserved, creating a uniquely beautiful appearance.

This vase is more than a decorative antique: it is a finely made piece of Japanese cultural heritage, representing the artistic ambition and technical brilliance of Meiji-period Kyoto Satsuma.
