A rare and impressive four-figure lace porcelain group by Ernst Bohne Söhne, Rudolstadt (Thuringia), dated c.1901. A refined salon scene: a lady at the piano, a gentleman beside her, and a courting couple, with a red cloak draped across the instrument. The modelling is exceptionally crisp, with expressive faces, elegant gestures and finely detailed painting in rich colors with gilded highlights. A very fine and elegant work, exemplifying Thuringian lace porcelain. Marked to the base with the crown over N, associated with Ernst Bohne & Söhne and sometimes misattributed to Capodimonte. This mark was used on imitations and export porcelain from 1901 to 1920. The additional inscription "Made in Germany" confirms the piece was created for export at the beginning of the 20th century. Ernst Bohne Söhne, founded in Rudolstadt in the mid-19th century, earned international awards in the 1870s and 1880s. The factory became well known for ivory imitations, biscuit figures, and Dresden-style lace porcelain. Early 20th-century examples, such as this group, are highly collectible today for their delicate lace technique, expressive modelling and high-quality decoration.
Condition: The lady on the right has lace damage to the front below the waist, the lower right side, and the rear. The other three figures have minor lace losses consistent with typical wear for fragile lacework (please see photos). A chip to the lower rim of the base at the right front. However, the overall integrity and decorative impact of the composition remain completely unaffected when viewed from the front, with faces, hands, flowers, gilding and painted surfaces preserved in excellent order. One rubber pad is missing from a foot of the wooden stand.
