Edmé Samson porcelain figure of a theatrical actor with mask, Paris, c.1860-1880. A refined 19th-century interpretation of an 18th-century Chelsea model, combining elegant modelling with strong decorative presence.
The figure represents a commedia dell'arte performer holding a black mask, standing before a tree support with dense bocage on a rococo base with gilding. The palette is bright and decorative, typical of high-quality Samson production, with carefully painted costume and richly applied floral elements.
Working from celebrated originals, Samson created sophisticated reinterpretations rather than literal copies, translating 18th-century models into the richer decorative language of the 19th century. As noted in Encyclopaedia Britannica, hard-paste copies of Chelsea porcelain were actively produced by Samson of Paris.
Mark: small gold anchor to the reverse, in imitation of the Chelsea factory mark.
