A documented Derby model produced by Derby Porcelain Factory as model no. 314, a later reissue of model no. 184 first introduced in 1771.
The pair represents a seated gentleman reading a book and a young woman engaged in tatting, holding a tatting shuttle in her right hand. The female figure wears a pink bodice with gilt-banded sleeves and a deep cobalt-blue skirt richly decorated with gilt floral motifs, together with a gilt necklace at the neckline; the male companion is painted in complementary polychrome enamels. Both are seated on rococo chairs raised on pierced scrolled bases with applied floral decoration and gilt highlights.
The sustained popularity of this subject led Derby to reissue the model repeatedly in various decorative palettes throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries. The model is recorded in Derby Porcelain Figurines 1750-1848 by Peter Bradshaw, p. 354. Both bases retain the incised model number 314 and red-painted factory marks.

Girl — height 16.5 cm; width 9.3 cm; depth 11 cm; weight 500 g.
Boy — height 17 cm; width 9.3 cm; depth 12.5 cm; weight 608 g.
Condition
Girl — minor losses to gilding; small loss to the tatting shuttle in the right hand.
Boy — restored left leg; restored right arm from the shoulder including the book; chair repaired, the restoration is of a reasonably good standard; minor losses to gilding.
