A rare opportunity to acquire a Wedgwood Lustre bowl, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones around 1915.These brilliant Wedgwood lustres came triumphantly to life, and the initial pattern number of the "First Ten Lustre Decorations", Z4823, saw the light of day in October 1914, appropriately enough almost exactly nine months after Daisy full establishment as a staff designer! An early Fairyland Lustre design, Z4823 reflects Makeig-Jones's vision of providing bright, fantastical imagery as a counterpoint to the sombre wartime atmosphere of early 20th-century Britain. The bowl's exterior features Dark Green Lustre with dark all-color stainings, producing an intense shade with a soft violet shift in changing light. Around the perimeter run gilt butterflies and oriental motifs; a Greek-key frieze marks the base and a gilt foliate band finishes the rim. Inside, vivid Orange Lustre with crimson mottling surrounds an oriental medallion in fine gold. Its rich colors and detailed gilding make it a captivating display piece and a highly desirable collector's item.
Size: height 5.8 cm; diameter 10.6 cm. Condition: excellent; white areas inside (see photos) are under-glaze from manufacture. Lustreware's depth and vibrancy can only be fully appreciated in person.
