A fine pair of Coalport porcelain dessert dishes dating to the Rococo Revival period, c.1835-1845. Their shaped square form, moulded scroll handles, flower-shaped reserves and richly gilded ivory-beige borders exemplify the decorative elegance for which Coalport became renowned during the second quarter of the nineteenth century.
A distinctive feature of the pair is the richness of the decoration. Large flower-shaped reserves are framed by gilt scrollwork, grape motifs and finely modelled ornament, while the centres are painted with individually composed bouquets of roses, asters and seasonal flowers. Although conceived as a pair, the floral compositions differ on each dish rather than repeating a single pattern, reflecting the character of true hand-painted Coalport decoration.
One of the dishes retains an old collector's label attributing the decoration to Jabez Aston. We have verified this attribution through the Catalogue of the Herbert Allen Collection of English Porcelain, preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where he is recorded as a flower and fruit painter working for Coalport. He spent his entire career at the factory and became one of its most accomplished decorators. Specialising in floral and fruit subjects, he produced a remarkable number of highly finished pieces whose quality helped establish the factory's reputation for painted porcelain during the nineteenth century. Today he is particularly admired for his richness of colour, naturalistic modelling and painterly treatment of botanical subjects.
Flower painting was among Coalport's most important artistic specialities and one of the hallmarks of the factory throughout the nineteenth century. This pair combines that celebrated tradition with the richly ornamented Rococo Revival forms that made Coalport one of England's leading porcelain manufacturers.
