An authentic antique Chinese porcelain bowl dating to the Kangxi Period of the Qing Dynasty, circa 1700-1720. Produced at Jingdezhen, it is decorated in the celebrated Chinese Imari palette, combining rich underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron-red enamels and finely applied gilt decoration.
The chamfered square body centres on a pomegranate-shaped cartouche enclosing an elegant garden pavilion with iron-red walls and a cobalt-blue roof, accompanied by a scholar's rock and flowering prunus. Throughout Chinese decorative art these motifs symbolise refinement, longevity and the cultured ideals associated with the scholar's garden.
The gently sloping interior is filled with finely painted floral sprays of chrysanthemums, lotuses and peonies. Thickly applied iron-red enamels create a subtle raised texture, while delicate gilt highlights enrich the blossoms and emphasise the exceptional quality of the hand decoration characteristic of Kangxi-period Jingdezhen porcelain.
A single underglaze cobalt-blue line defines the central well, while each chamfered corner is decorated with traditional ruyi-head motifs. The unmarked base retains typical early eighteenth-century kiln characteristics, including an unglazed foot with embedded kiln grit and minute firing specks, together with old pencil inventory inscriptions left by previous owners. More than three centuries after its manufacture, this bowl remains an impressive example of the artistic and technical achievements of Kangxi-period Chinese porcelain and represents a highly desirable piece for collectors of early Chinese Imari.
