Chinese amber necklace composed of eighteen individually carved heads representing luohan, separated by spherical spacer beads and terminating in a sculptural pendant with a small figural group. The lively carving shows expressive and occasionally grotesque facial features typical of traditional Chinese depictions of the Eighteen Luohan.
The amber shows attractive natural variation from deep cognac and reddish tones to lighter honey hues, with internal clouding and inclusions visible within the translucent material. Such amber was historically imported into China and widely used by Chinese craftsmen during the Qing dynasty.
Necklaces incorporating eighteen carved heads refer symbolically to the Eighteen Luohan of Chinese Buddhist tradition and are particularly appealing to collectors for the individuality of each carved head and the warm colour of the amber.
