An elegant antique Chinese Canton enamel-on-copper bowl produced during the Guangxu period of the late Qing Dynasty, circa 1885-1905. The scalloped exterior is richly decorated in the distinctive Famille Noire palette with a continuous Millefleurs pattern of hand-painted peonies, chrysanthemums and lilies, creating an exceptionally vibrant decorative effect.
The white enamel interior is centred with the auspicious Three Abundances (Sanduo) motif of a pomegranate, peach and Buddha's Hand citron, traditional Chinese emblems of fertility, longevity and prosperity, framed by a finely executed red-and-gold geometric border.
Made by firing multiple layers of vitreous enamel onto a hand-hammered copper body, the bowl displays the characteristic workmanship of late nineteenth-century Canton workshops producing luxury wares for the European export trade. Its original firing pits, gentle patina and natural ageing are consistent with authentic hand-crafted Canton enamels and are appreciated by experienced collectors.
