This antique hand-painted, hard-paste porcelain figurine depicts a young woman in a pink bonnet and blue apron with gold ornamentation, holding a basket of clean linen in her right hand and a bunch of flowers in the other.
The figurine is richly enameled and decorated with gilding, standing on a circular base embellished with Rococo scrollwork. The company mark is on the bottom. As is often the case with porcelain figurines made by true craftsmen, the accuracy of detail—of the face, jewelry, and clothing—is remarkable. This figurine is the perfect decoration for a classic interior.
The Chelsea Porcelain Factory was established in London, England, in 1743. It was one of the first porcelain factories in England and quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality, finely detailed porcelain. Founded by Nicholas Sprimont, a Belgian silversmith, it was initially known for its soft-paste porcelain figurines and tableware. In the 1750s, the factory began producing hard-paste porcelain, which was more durable and of higher quality than the soft-paste porcelain it had been producing. The factory's reputation was further solidified by its production of ornate, hand-painted porcelain figures, many of which were based on popular 18th-century paintings. Chelsea porcelain was highly prized by the wealthy and was often given as gifts to members of the royal family. The factory experienced various ownership changes throughout the 18th century, including a takeover by William Duesbury, who owned it from 1769 to 1784 when it closed due to financial difficulties and competition from other porcelain manufacturers.
