England, Worcester. Fine porcelain dessert plate in the celebrated "Dragon in Compartments" pattern, c.1800. The design, derived from early-18th-century Kangxi prototypes first adopted at Worcester c.1765-1768 and continued by Chamberlain, presents a dragon and a kylin in opposing panels with reserves of vases and scholar's objects, executed in clear translucent enamels with gilt accents. At the centre is an armorial roundel from a commissioned family service, the arms belonging to the Bewicke (Bewick) family of Newcastle upon Tyne and their seat, Close House, Northumberland. Reverse with hand-written factory script: Chamberlain Worcester No. 75. Commissioned armorial wares were significantly more expensive than standard production, which makes the value of this plate special. A handsome late-Georgian Worcester for both pattern and armorial collectors.
