An antique English soft-paste porcelain figure of a Bacchus putto, produced at the Bow Porcelain Manufactory, London, circa 1760. The figure represents a cherubic child associated with Bacchus, the classical god of wine, typically shown holding or beside grapes, a wine vessel or other attributes of the harvest.
The model reflects the playful Rococo taste that dominated mid-eighteenth-century English porcelain production, drawing on both classical mythology and Continental decorative sources. Bow figures of this type were intended for display in fashionable interiors and demonstrate the factory's ability to translate sculptural themes into soft-paste porcelain.
The underside bears the recognised iron-red anchor and dagger mark used at Bow about 1760.
Bow was one of the leading early English porcelain factories, active in London from the mid-1740s until the 1770s. Its products were in great demand, and in 1754 Bow is recorded as having sold goods equivalent to approximately 5,017,855 GBP in modern terms. After reaching its height in the 1750s, the factory gradually declined, weakened by financial difficulties and by changing fashion, which made its earlier Rococo style less competitive. In 1776, what remained of the Bow factory was sold for a small sum to William Duesbury, and the moulds and implements were transferred to Derby, marking the final absorption of the manufactory into the Derby enterprise.
Created more than 250 years ago, this figure is a strong example of early English porcelain with clear links to classical iconography and Rococo design.
