This rare and striking Wedgwood lustre bowl was made in England circa 1914 and belongs to the early Ordinary Lustre range designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones (1881-1945). Makeig-Jones was known for her pioneering work at Wedgwood, where she introduced fantastical motifs and iridescent finishes that helped define early 20th-century ceramic design.
The bowl is crafted in the elegant York Cup shape, with a gently flared rim and a low, raised foot. The exterior features a deep mottled crimson enamel ground with finely detailed gilt butterflies. The interior is richly enamelled in a starry iridescent purple and blue, with a central gilt scarab surrounded by a scrolling floral border.
The base is printed with the Wedgwood Portland Vase mark and the hand-painted pattern number Z4825. This design was produced only between 1914 and 1929, and the series is now highly sought-after by collectors of English Art Deco and lustreware.
This bowl would make a standout piece in any collection of early 20th-century ceramics or a refined accent in an Art Deco or maximalist interior.
