Early 19th-century English ceramic bust of William Shakespeare, made in Staffordshire around 1800. Hand-molded and glazed in vivid tones of plum, ochre, and cream, the figure stands on a faux-marble base with expressive modeling and subtle craquelure across the surface. This bust dates to around 1800 and represents one of the earliest known ceramic versions of Shakespeare. Later copies were produced in larger numbers, especially between 1850 and 1890, but early examples like this are uncommon. The design draws on the iconic Chandos portrait — the most widely recognized image of Shakespeare, attributed to John Taylor and believed to have been painted from life circa 1610. This facial type became the standard reference for generations of sculptors and decorators. A beautiful and historically meaningful piece, perfect for a literary interior, antique-themed library, or collector of English ceramics.
Condition: The bust shows signs of age including an enamel chip to the lower cloak, a minor base chip, glaze crackling throughout, and scattered paint wear — all consistent with its period and enhancing its authentic antique appeal.
