An antique Kyoto Satsuma covered jar of generous size and elegant decoration, signed Yamashu and dating to the late Meiji period. The jar is painted with a continuous riverscape of soft hills, distant pavilions and floral clusters in pastel enamels of pink, lilac and orange, all enhanced with controlled gilt detailing. Broad brocade borders wrap the shoulder and base, with a domed lid that repeats the floral bands and is finished with a gilt knop.
The underside carries a black-and-gold Yamashu (山珠) mark and a red Shimazu crest, indicating a Kyoto workshop producing refined Satsuma for the export market. The decoration reads harmoniously from every viewpoint, making the piece a strong accent for a curated interior or Japanese art collection.
Historical Background
Kyoto Satsuma developed a distinctive pastel palette and precise line work in the late 19th century. These workshops aimed for delicacy and atmosphere rather than visual density, producing pieces that appealed strongly to Western collectors. The Yamashu cartouche is associated with better Kyoto studios active during the 1880s-1890s.
