Wonderful antique earthenware (pearlware) jug, transfer printed in black with Masonic designs. The large lip and robust body allow for easy pouring even several centuries after its creation. The Masonic overtones of the scene lend it a sombre and distinguished nature; the three women represent hope, faith and charity. Friendly Societies such as the one this commemorates were often organised on the basis of helping the poor and needy.

Inscription reads, "Widows and Orphans of Independent Odd Fellows Manchester Unity", referring to one of the most famous Friendly Societies in the Commonwealth. Odd Fellows is an international fraternity consisting of lodges first documented in 1730 in London. Both modern Freemasonry and the Odd Fellows came into existence around the same time, the 18th century, and both came from the workers guilds. However, unlike the Freemasons that put emphasis on self-improvement, the Odd Fellowship prioritised doing good works in the community.
Very good antique condition, some small spots on the enamel in some places, minor "rub-out" on the inscription beneath the image, please carefully regard all photos.
