Antique Japanese Imari Porcelain Ginger Jar with Cover, Arita Meiji Period

£400.00
A decorative Japanese Imari porcelain ginger jar with cover produced in Arita, Japan during the late Meiji period. Painted in the traditional Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue and iron-red enamels, the vessel displays the lively colour contrasts that made these wares so admired in Europe from the 18th century onward.

The vessel is of elegant baluster form with a domed cover surmounted by a pointed finial. The pointed finial on the lid follows a traditional East Asian jar design, a feature inherited from earlier Chinese storage vessels.

The body is arranged with alternating shaped panels showing flowering branches with a bird in flight and formal floral motifs reserved against deep cobalt grounds. The shoulder and lower sections are enriched with stylised geometric borders and dense blossom decoration typical of traditional Imari ware.

This form belongs to the decorative ginger jar or covered vase type produced for both domestic use and export. In Japan similar vessels could be used for storing aromatic herbs or incense materials, while in Europe jars of this type were often used for tea, ginger or spices before becoming popular decorative objects for mantelpieces and cabinets.

A handsome antique example of classic Japanese Imari porcelain that displays beautifully in an interior or porcelain collection.
