Japanese Imari Treasure Boat Dish, c. 1900
Shallow-potted Japanese Imari dish in the form of a treasure boat, featuring a modelled stern and prow. The decoration follows the traditional Imari palette, with underglaze blue, iron red, and gold, accented by small areas of green enamel. The exterior sides are adorned with stylised waves and sea spray in underglaze blue, while the unglazed flat base reflects the typical craftsmanship of the period.
In Japanese folklore, the Takarabune or "Treasure Ship" is a mythical vessel piloted by the Seven Lucky Gods during the first three days of the New Year. Ceramic boat-shaped dishes like this were produced during the Meiji period (1868-1912) in both Arita and Imari porcelains.
This particular example features an exceptionally rare painted motif, depicting a mythical creature with the head of a dragon and the body of a deer.
