Antique German Porcelain Sweetmeat Figures Pair, Volkstedt, c.1880

£500.00
A finely modelled pair of antique German porcelain sweetmeat figures depicting a boy and a girl as harvest gatherers, attributed to the Volkstedt manufactory, Thuringia, circa 1880. Each figure incorporates a functional sweetmeat bowl formed as a stylised tree stump, decorated with applied foliage, flowers and fruit.

The figures stand on rococo-style bases with fluid scrollwork, typical of late 19th-century Thuringian porcelain. The dense, high-fired porcelain is fully hand painted in soft polychrome enamels, with delicately rendered faces and carefully detailed costumes. The underside of the bases bears an underglaze factory mark consistent with Volkstedt production of this period. Such paired figural sweetmeat dishes are increasingly scarce.
