Antique Derby Porcelain Figurine of Mars, Roman God of War - Bloor Period, c. 1830
A finely crafted antique porcelain figurine depicting Mars, the Roman god of war and son of Jupiter and Juno—known as Ares in Greek mythology. Mars was one of the most important deities in Roman religion, especially venerated by the military. He was honoured in March (Latin Martius, named after him) and October, which traditionally marked the start and end of the Roman campaign season.
This figurine presents Mars in striking detail, with vibrant colouring and gilt accents that reflect the craftsmanship of Derby porcelain during the Bloor period (c. 1830).
