Rare early Derby porcelain figurines pair "Young Gardeners" c. 1780s
This superb pair of antique Derby soft-paste porcelain figurines dates from the late 18th century and exemplifies the finest quality of early English porcelain artistry. Modelled as a charming boy and girl dressed in traditional Georgian attire, the figures are seated on Rococo-style scroll-moulded bases decorated with greenery and applied flowers.
The boy, in a cobalt blue jacket with gilt detailing, holds a basket brimming with fruits, while the girl, wearing a vivid yellow skirt and pink bonnet, presents a basket of finely modelled flowers. Both figures are exquisitely hand-painted in vibrant enamels of dark blue, yellow, green, and pink, with generous gilded highlights throughout.
The animated poses, expressive facial features, and detailed costume painting are characteristic of the exceptional craftsmanship associated with Derby during the Georgian period. The bases are hand-painted with the red crown mark, confirming manufacture at the prestigious Nottingham Road factory around the 1780s.
