A rare pair of antique English porcelain dishes produced by Copeland & Garrett, successor to the celebrated Spode factory, during the brief partnership period of 1833-1847. Combining named Scottish views, vivid apple-green grounds and richly moulded Rococo Revival ornament, the pair represents the type of richly decorated display wares for which the factory became renowned.
Each dish is of shaped rectangular form with raised sides and richly moulded borders highlighted with gilding. The centres are finely painted with named Scottish views, inscribed Loch Cullin and Loch Alsh.
The vivid apple-green grounds are characteristic of some of the factory's most ambitious decorative wares. The reverse bears pattern number 5750, indicating that the dishes formed part of a larger dessert or fruit service.
Copeland & Garrett traded for only fourteen years between 1833 and 1847 under the partnership of William Taylor Copeland and Thomas Garrett. This comparatively brief period of production makes wares bearing the Copeland & Garrett mark significantly rarer than later Copeland ceramics.
Pieces from the Copeland & Garrett period are preserved in important museum collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum. The combination of named Scottish views, pattern number 5750, vivid apple-green grounds and the scarce Copeland & Garrett mark gives the pair considerable appeal for collectors of early Victorian porcelain and nineteenth-century topographical ceramics. Complete surviving pairs are encountered far less frequently than single pieces.
