Fine Antique Carved Figurine of Shou (壽)
This finely carved figurine depicts Shou (壽), also known as Shouxing (壽星), a revered god in Chinese cosmology. Also represented as a star of the South Pole, he is believed to wield power over the life spans of mortals.
Shou is traditionally recognised by his high, domed forehead and the peach he carries, symbolising immortality. According to legend, he remained in his mother's womb for ten years and was already an old man at birth. In his hand, he also holds his fabled gourd, said to contain the elixir of life.
Fine craftsmanship is evident in the intricate detailing, with special attention paid to the figure's expression and adornments. The pale-green soapstone harmonises beautifully with the original soapstone stand, which is carved to resemble a natural rock formation and securely attached to the figure.
