A fine antique Bohemian decanter dating to c.1870-1890, crafted from deep twin-layer cobalt blue glass and decorated with hand-painted enamel portrait medallions depicting Naser al-Din Shah Qajar. Created for the luxury Qajar market, pieces of this type were commissioned by aristocratic patrons and members of the royal court during the final decades of the nineteenth century.
The bulbous body is richly decorated with raised gilding, hand-chased scrolling foliate ornament and delicate multi-coloured enamel dot decoration executed in the traditional tre fuochi manner. The portrait medallions are exceptionally well painted and remain beautifully preserved.
Luxury decanters of this type are associated with the growing demand for fine Bohemian glass among elite Middle Eastern patrons following the ruler's celebrated visits to Europe in 1873, 1878 and 1889.
Among the most important manufacturers serving this market was Ludwig Moser of Carlsbad (present-day Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic), whose workshop became renowned for combining the finest traditions of Bohemian glassmaking with Islamic artistic taste.
The survival of the original steeple-form pointed stopper greatly enhances the desirability of the piece. Because the elongated needle-like finials were highly fragile, complete examples are considerably less common than damaged survivors.
A highly decorative and historically interesting example of late nineteenth-century Bohemian luxury glass created for one of the most prestigious export markets of the period.
