A rare and poignant piece of early 19th-century English commemorative pottery, this Staffordshire lustre jug was made around 1817 to honour Princess Charlotte of Wales. It is decorated with rich puce lustre bands and detailed black transfer prints. The front shows a powerful image of Britannia weeping at a tomb, surrounded by classical motifs including angels, a globe, and the inscription: "TO THE MEMORY OF PRINCESS CHARLOTTE."
Princess Charlotte, the only daughter of George IV and Caroline of Brunswick, was heir presumptive to the British throne. Her unexpected death in childbirth in 1817 at just 21 years of age shocked the nation, leading to widespread mourning and a surge in memorial art and pottery like this.
This jug is a historically significant and highly collectible piece, capturing the spirit of national grief and remembrance through a finely decorated form.

Condition
Good antique condition. Firing flaws include two small cracks at the upper side of the handle and a crack inside the spout. Some yellowing and firing marks are visible on the lower handle area. Interior hairlines not visible externally. Losses to the lustre on the rim, but the black printed imagery remains clear and well preserved.
